BOOKIES TIP OCTOBER TO BE HOTTEST AND DRIEST ON RECORD AFTER SCORCHING SEPTEMBER

(London, 30th September) Ask any salmon fisherman how they’ve got on in September and they’re likely to recount a sorry tale of woe, blaming poor conditions, low river levels and too many beers for feebly not catching a single fish. And no wonder, the UK has just recorded its driest September since records began, with only 19.4mm of the wet stuff (about a fifth of the normal level) falling across the month. Plus, if he’s had a couple already, don’t be surprised if our poor fisherman friend also blames heatstroke on why he couldn’t catch a cold, let alone a fish as temperatures soared to record breaking levels across the month.

Despite a splash of rain forecast for the weekend, bookmakers Paddy Power are tipping October to continue in the same vein offering 4/1 for it to be the driest on record, while being forced to slash the odds on it being the warmest on record from 6/1 into 3/1 with temperatures north of 20 degrees forecast for tomorrow.

Elsewhere, Paddy has also chopped the odds on a nationwide hosepipe ban in 2015 from 10/1 into 8/1 this morning despite the devastating floods only months ago.

Paddy Power’s great grandfather said: "Why does a salmon rise? Why does a small boy cross the street just to kick a tin can"

250-1 Pope Francis to baptise an alien

London / Dublin, 25th September 2014: Beware. There are spooky going-ons going on. On the day Nigel Farage comes out in support of team Europe at the Ryder Cup, the Pope’s astronomer reveals his belief there is definitely life beyond earth and how happy he would be to baptise monstrosities from beyond the stars.

The rather leftfield statement comes only months after the Pope himself said Martians would be welcomed into the church which got Paddy thinking. Firstly, why does the Pope need an astronomer. Secondly, what are the odds for the Pope to meet ET while he’s in the hat seat.

Fans of Scottish football should look away now. The bookmaker makes it 100/1 for Francis to announce he’s met an alien, while it’s 125/1 for the Tartan Army to lift the 2016 European cup. And if that wasn’t weird enough, Paddy is also offering 250/1 for Pope Francis to baptise an alien during his reign.

In other weird news astronomers (presumably not the Pope’s) have detected water vapour in the atmosphere of a planet that orbits a star 120 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus. While it’s an unlikely 200/1 for life to be found on the catchily named HAT-P-11b, that’s a hell of a lot better than the 5000/1 on offer for San Marino for Euro glory.

Paddy Power said: “Astronomer wanted. Duties include upkeep of Paddy Power meteorite collection. Apply within.”

100/1 Pope Francis to confirm via public address that he has encountered an extra-terrestrial being during his papacy
200/1 Alien life forms to be discovered on HAT-P-11b by the end of 2015
250/1 Pope Francis to baptise an extra-terrestrial being during his papacy

LAST CHANCE TO IMPRESS FOR RYDER CUP SPOTS

London, August 27th: 8 of the 9 automatic qualification spots for team Europe finalised, and this is the final weekend to impress Captain Paul McGinley. The numerical wizards at Paddy Power have been looking at who is going to make the cut, and who will be taking McGinley off their Christmas card list.

With the Deustche Bank beginning on a Friday and finishing on Monday, the FedEx Cup event in Boston will not count in the European Ryder Cup points. This means Stephen Gallacher, who takes part in the Italian Open, is the only player who can push Graeme McDowell out of the automatic qualification spots.

No matter what the outcome it would be a huge shock if GMac wasn’t in the 12-strong team come Tuesday’s announcement. If the Irishman is to be squeezed out by Gallacher, he should still get a wildcard pick and looks a certainty at 1/33 to qualify.

Gallacher is a 4/6 chance to qualify for the team. But if he fails to finish in the top 2 this weekend, he will fight it out with 3 English stalwarts, among others, for the remaining 3 Ryder Cup places. Ian Poulter 1/10, Luke Donald 3/10 and Lee Westwood 4/5, will all play in the Deustche Bank Championship, knowing that a good performance could secure them a Captain’s Pick.

Amongst the outsiders to get the nod are Francesco Molinari at 11/2 and Joost Luiten at 9/1 who will both play in Italy. While in the States, Paul Casey is 7/1 to make the team and cap of a great return to form.

A Paddy Power spokesperson said: “It looks like McGinley will have monster of a decision to make, go for the player in the best form and pick Gallacher, or show teeny-tiny golf balls and stick to the tried and trusted and pick the 3 English men.”

Turning to the FedEx Cup, Rory didn’t win last week, that was a change, but he is still red hot favourite at 9/2 for the Deustche Bank tournament. Trailing the world number 1 in the betting are the usual suspects of Adam Scott at 12/1, Jason Day at 16/1 and Henrik Stenson at 18/1. Although Rickie Fowler must be thinking what does he need to do to get a win around here, with another top 10 last week, he must be considered at 18/1 to win the event or 13/8 to be in the top ten.
